This is the second book in the Linesman series.

Ean Lambert has somehow survived the crises and traumas of the first novel "Linesman". Unfortunately there still a lot to do. In particular it looks like only he can persuade the mysterious alien lines to cooperate.

With a near total lack of confidence he still manages to do almost whatever he wants, regardless of orders an military hierarchy. If I was the captain of the ship he was on I would have spaced him the first day he arrived on a ship. But I don't really see myself captaining a spaceship. On the other hand I could see myself working in a mirror factory. OK, I'm not taking this seriously but I couldn't even finish the book. Two reasons. I still couldn't see what was special about these so-called lines and I couldn't take any more of Ean's pathetic personality issues. Furthermore the ravishing Lady Lyan was largely absent in the bits I actually read. Well, that's three reasons, but the last one was an important factor for me.
